Students prepared to pay premium for dedicated blocks

Rents for student accommodation in privately run halls of residence have reportedly increased in some cases by 8% in the past year.

The traditional university run halls of residence, with their subsidised rents are being replaced by purpose built blocks managed by private companies , such as Unite Group.

The Sunday Times has reported on one instance of a tiny studio flat in a Unite block in London been charged at £548 a week. This same rent could reportedly rent a flat twice the size in the same area in a non student block.

However the desire for many new students, particularly foreign students is to have the security a 'student only' block affords them, and they seem to be prepared to pay a massive rental premium to get it.
