Landlord Action report record number of court hearings in one day

Landlord Action, a company specialising in tenant eviction, had a record number of court hearings in one day when 16 cases were heard in courts around the country on Tuesday 9th June for landlords they have acted for.

Paul Shamplina, Landlord Action director feels that this is a sign of the times, commenting, “16 cases in one day is the most we have come across since the company started in 1999 and just goes to show how many landlords are having to take their tenants to court in order to recover money owed to them. Of course, some cases are genuine hardship but there are others who have no intention of paying up. A lot of landlords nowadays are people who went into the buy to let business as a way of saving money for their retirement or owners who have had to let out their home in order to try to hold on to it during tough times and they end up actually losing money. One of the cases heard on Tuesday was for arrears amounting to £15,500”

Twelve different courts including Woolwich, Bristol, Oxford, Birmingham, Croydon and Warrington all heard cases but one court seems to have becoming increasingly busy for repossession cases as Paul explains, “Watford appears to be a particularly common area at the moment with four hearings. Possession cases are listed on the same day each week but a pattern has shown them increasing here over a period of time.”

All hearings produced a positive result for the landlords concerned with orders made for possessions and judgement for the arrears, interest on the arrears and costs against the defendant, with the exception of one that was adjourned due to a dispute in the arrears figure.
