I recently wrote a blog advising landlords of the requirements if you have a property that is classed as a house in multiple occupation (HMO).
I have just come across a Court Judgment in which a landlord ignored the planning rules, he converted 3 properties into 16 rooms to let, charging £800 per room per month.
At Kingston Crown Court the landlord was fined £21,000 for not complying with planning requirements, had rent in the sum of £112,500 confiscated and was ordered to pay costs in the sum of £9,973.
If you are unsure whether your HMO property complies with the planning regulations contact your local authority.
If you would like any further advice about HMOs or any other landlord legal advice please either email me at rbrough@fidler.co.uk or telephone on 01623 448331.
