Property Expert David Lawrenson- his views on Governments HMO plans

David Lawrenson Property of LettingFocus comments on the Governments intention to change the control of HMO property.

“As the plans to require landlords to get planning permission before turning houses into HMOs (even non licensable HMOs) were rejected by the National Union of Students, the British Property as well as landlord groups, it seems hard to see where the need for this comes from.
Surely it would be better if local councils worked with landlords in their areas to clean up those shared properties that look like slums with the discarded mattresses, the unkempt gardens and the like.

If the powers they already have are not strong enough to do this then they should be beefed up.
This proposal to use planning policy to restrict shared houses seems to be like using a sledgehammer to what is a local (though growing) problem."
