Parliament to debate regulation of letting agents

Parliament is to debate the regulation of letting agents next week in an amendment to a Bill currently going through the House the BBC reports.

I recently discussed the idea of mandatory regulation of letting agents.

Is the problem being over emphasised by a London centric media where a much higher proportion of the country rents rather than buy their property? I fully accept that there are some dodgy letting agents out there.  But are there not dodgy builders, car salesmen, plumbers.  Would regulation eradicate the problems?  Is it not a case of both landlords and tenants being commercially aware and using letting agents that have a track record and are already a member of one of the existing letting agent ombudsman schemes.
