The Return of the Lodgers - will homeowners start to share their space and add to the accidental landlord numbers?

As we see more and more home-owners struggling with mortgages and facing up to the harsh realities of negative equity, will we see the return of the lodger.

Many individuals have jumped into the property market and are now faced with an uncertain financial future.

Sharing a fridge with strangers is far from the dream but will this be a proposal that more and more homeowners will start to consider.

An increase in lodgers will bring more supply into what is perceived as an already flooded rental market.

A Landlord Saves Tenant from Burning Property

An American landlord has pulled a tenant from his burning property.

This reminded me just how important that landlords remember to have taken out a fire risk assessment of their rental property.

More rental data shows falls in rents in many parts of the UK.

Tenants continue to profit from falling rents in these difficult times.

The picture for rental demand varies dramatically on a regional scale. In London and the South East, average rents have fallen by 5.9% and 6.1% respectively in the past year. In comparison, the North East has actually seen rents increase by 10% since February 2008.

Buy-to-let mortgage latest

The Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meets this week and will announce their latest decision on Thursday. Many commentators expect a further easing of the base rate to a record low of 0.5%.

This potential imminent base rate reduction has prompted many buy-to-let lenders into a flurry of activity shuffling their product ranges in anticipation of the the lower rate.

One such lender is the Loughborough who have replaced their 4.99% variable rate with a 3 year 4.99% fixed rate and term mortgage. The mortgage still has a fee of £999 and EMONEYFACTS gives a 4 star rating.
