Young still aspire to buy

Almost all young people under 30 want to make buying a home a top priority, and don’t want to settle for long-term renting.

The poll, of 2,465 consumers of all ages, blows wide open the theory that more and more will go the European way and choose to be tenants for lifestyle reasons.

People under 30 are more opposed than any other age group to ‘continental’ models of tenure in which families routinely rent for the duration of their adult lives.

In a new poll 9 out of 10 of the 18 to 29-year-olds questioned would not be happy if they were forced to rent property throughout their life.

64 percent also said they would not be happy if they were still renting when they were looking to start a family.

The research, was conducted independently for Barratt Homes and points to a continued culture of aspiration to home ownership in the UK despite the property crisis of recent years.

So much for the shift towards the continental concept of long term renting.

Tenants better off renting

Landlords a few years ago were being pilloried because apparently we were making fortunes out of our property portfolios and forcing first time buyers out of the market.

Well how rapidly things change!

Now it appears that increasingly commentators are putting forward the view that people are better off renting.  Because house prices are not rocketing skywards the reality of real costs of ownership are apparent.  The reality is if you rent the landlord:

* pays for the insurance
* pays for repairs
* pays for the mortgage including the hefty upfront mortgage set up fees
* takes the risk of falling house prices

Maybe some of the first time buyer wingers ought to consider these factors next time they are dragged out by the media to make their ill informed pronouncements.

Cutting down on space before spending - renting out a spareroom

As cash become tighter I predict more and more people will look to rent out spare rooms to help keep their mortgage payments met.

There is a certain opulent extravagance about all those single ladies, and single men sat alone in the evenings in their three bedroom executive homes with a microwave meal on their lap.

Or all those trendy urbanites in their two bedroom apartments wandering into their second bedroom to play dj on their mixing desks.

These debt laden youngsters could turn into the next 'Rigsby generation' and start letting spare rooms to friends and acquaintances.

This generation of consumers, will look to forsake the luxury of space before they cut back on purchasing and going out.

This article in the Telegraph outlines some issues for landlords letting out a spare room.
