I don't understand the rationale for having a debate about whether landlords 'should' let to tenants with pets. I can see that there are pros and cons, but it is a decision for nobody but the landlord. Modern human rights legislation prevents anyone from discriminating against people - I repeat, people - on the grounds of pretty well anything except their behaviour, which is as it should be. If some landlords don't mind, or want to encourage, the presence of animals on their property, that's their business. But if I choose not to have dogs in my house, that's mine; why on earth should anyone feel they have a right to debate that? My one experience so far has been with tenants who wilfully ignored the 'no pets' rule and are now refusing to pay for a clean up by BPCA professionals after a year of a dog crapping and shedding hairs and fleas all over my property. The agent, having taken his 15% for years, tells me I don't have a leg to stand on. Yet some people still think there is a need for a 'debate'?
