Green shoots

The sunshine is warmer and the days are getting longer. Time to go outside; it’s nearly spring.

Property Sparrow’s thoughts turn to seeds and bulbs and leaves.

None of her properties has a private garden but they all have some sort of shared garden or ‘managed communal green space’, as you might say. Actually, most of it is boring grass; not a flower or berry in sight.

Property Sparrow regrets not making more of an effort last autumn. She wishes she had planted some bulbs in the communal areas. Without troubling the freeholder and in half an hour with a spade and £5 of daffodil bulbs she could have made a real difference.

She’s green with envy of another block just down the road. Built at around the same time and in a similar style, the only real differences there are the bold clumps of daffodils and pretty crocuses. It looks upmarket and settled. Someone has made the effort and it has paid off.

More reliable than property prices, most flowering bulbs come up every year. They are strong and maintenance free. Crocuses, bluebells and anemones tend to multiply and in only a few years a plain area can be transformed.

Why not make your own green shoots?

  1. Bulbs and flowers are fine. What I don't like is grass! One of my tenant wants to grass part of the rear garden. Guess what they will ask for next. A lawnmower. Full of the joys of Spring!
