I suspect the Arch Idiot Osborne will think his ridiculous tax scam has worked...what the dullard failed to understand, though, is that although Landlords may be selling, that doesn't mean there is more property available - it's not as if the Landlords were hoarding these properties, keeping them empty...people were living in them. Now they will be evicted...
100% agree with this comment of the the 380000 people being made homeless many are likely to be in a vulnerable situation and create huge pressures on Local authorities
Osborne completely failed to see what is obvious to most of us: only building more homes will solve the problem.
He tried to palm off culpability onto landlords, riding a wave of populist hype backing the witch hunt....and dodging responsibility for the failure of successive governments to simply encourage the building of more homes
On the advice of G.Brown I bought into buy to let in 2002 hopefully to provide an additional income for my retirement. Biggest mistake I ever made. Big bank landlord screws me for up to 12k pa service charge, add on my mortgage, council tax etc and my 2 properties lose money every year. Worse, their value is less now than in 2002 so coupled with the S/C they are practically unsellable. There’s plenty of foolish leaseholders like me around.
I've been a landlord (HYMOS) for 35 years and agree with Osborne! Buy to let mortgages have taken cheap homes away from first time buyers. Add to that the ridiculous fees charged by letting agencies and it doesn't take a genious to see that the housing market is faulty. Build more houses of the right style. Who, out there, is housing the 50+ single divorced men?
What the government appears to forget is that rental properties house more families during their life than a typical privately owned house! This will make matters worse, with less proprtties available for a multitude of rentals.
When will sense prevail... private landlords are of huge benefit to the housing market.
Governments, as usual jump to the latest load of rubbish told to them by advisers with no knowledge of the system, let alone know what they talk about. Hence Osborne jumped on the popular bandwagon without thought in a typical knee jerk way. With landlords hoping to sell, who will house the poorer community who cannot afford high rise rents of the corporate boys? The present situation is to rent of a small landlord, but with both the Tory and especially Labour putting their knives in, where will the social housing be for these people, or are their producing tents for erection in local parks?
