Landlords urged to use RCD's

The Electrical Safety Commission (ESC) is calling on landlords to ensure that there is adequate RCD protection in all of their buy-to-let properties.

Currently the ESC estimate fewer than half of UK households (49%) have adequate RCD protection and this number drops to just 30% for private tenants.

A Residual Current Device (RCD) is a life-saving device that protects against dangerous electric shock and reduces the risk of electrical fires. The ESC urge that a Plug-in RCDs should be used if there is no RCD in the fuse box.

Totally agree; just had a 4 bed house refitted with a new board and 10 RCD's and they found a major fault.......well worth the expense

Are you sure that you had 10 RCDs fitted? It is more likely that you had 10 MCBs, and 1, or possibly 2, RCDs fitted. This could also allow faults to be found.

RCD's are a life saving device and well worth the money in any installation, but they do not make up for professional installation or professional inspection and testing of electrical installations.

If installed incorrectly faults can still occur with an RCD protected installation.

Thought also needs to be given to Fire Alarm circuits and life protection services when installing a new RCD consumer unit.
