"The information that is now available on the internet makes it a lot easier for criminals to take out mortgages on properties they do not own, pocketing the money and leaving the legitimate owner in debt - with the stress and aggravation of retrieving title of their own property." according to ARLA.
The Land Registry has paid out 26 million since 2006 because landlords have failed to register properties.
Landlords need to make sure that the Land Registry sends any documentation regarding a rental property to the landlords own residential address. Sensitive documents regarding the ownership of a rental property could be utilised by tenants to commit property fraud.
