They're at it again!
The Eurocrats - not content with bringing out piles of pointless legislation such as the much vaunted EPCs.
You know our view on EPCs but they are now law.
The latest fiddlings from Eurocratville is that they are putting forward proposals to make changes to the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD). The CLG has recently published a consultation on the changes.
The proposals partly seek to expand and strengthen the directive.
Well surprise surprise the unaccountable eurocrats are flexing their muscles again.
The UK government is largely opposed to this - bit late now given that Phony Tony has signed up for the European constitution.
The key proposals are:
* buildings occupied by public authorities or where the public visit regularly are to have a Display Energy Certificate on display where the building is larger than 250 sq m as oppose to the current size of 1000 sq m;
* any commercial or domestic building which is renovated will also have to have its energy performance upgraded at the same time for which targets will be set;
* there will be minimum requirements for technical building systems such as boilers in commercial property.
Point 2 is the main concern for landlords. It could mean that any property that is being refurbished will have to have it's EPC rating upgraded at the time of refurbishment to a standard set by the Eurocrats.
The consultation closed on the 2 October 2009.
If you disagree with it what can you do?
Well previously in the old days when we had a national Parliament you could vote the Government out....except now the Government are powerless even where as in this case they disagree with the proposals.
Surely you can vote out the Eurocrats that make up these rules......no sorry they are unelected so you can't.
Actually, you can do nothing, zip; because our government have voted away it's powers and your vote. So much for democracy!
