Redrow announces shift away from 'rabbit hutch' developments

The house builder Redrow has announced it is moving away from developing city centre apartment blocks back towards building family homes again.

According to Chairman, Steve Morgan 'People are saying they want a back garden and a front garden and a place to park their car near their home. For the most part planners are happy to go with that.'

Redrow says the over supply of city centre apartments from developers was bought about under guidance from local government planners who are now seeing it as somewhat of a mistake, and are mostly backing the return to family homes.

In recent years, the UK's love affair with 'Friends' style city centre living has wained, with the realities of living in many of the UK's provincial towns and cities not living up to the excitement and glamour of New York.

The , small roomed, low ceilinged, two bedroom apartments that have been churned out by developers have been tagged as 'rabbit hutches', and bare know relation to the city centre 'loft style' living that they aspired to be.

The emperors new clothes have well and truly fallen to his ankles.

For landlords that have invested in ' rabbit hutches' this new direction will at least raise some hope that this will relieve the over supply of this property type.

For many people, a city centre 'rabbit hutch' can be an ideal place to live, but we have seen that developers and planners both got carried away, long after the real demand had been met.
