According to Emily Maitlis of BBC's Newsnight, the two Eds' consider landlords to belong to a "predator" class that could do with having a bite taken out of.
Labour's two 'Edded' monster |
This potential re-dress, fits into Labour's 'cost-of-living' narrative, they have constantly being barking on about now that all their other economic yelping has been largely silenced.
The Labour party are considering changes to the standard tenancy agreement as key to their election manifesto. With 9 million people in rented properties you can see that's its a potential vote winner.
So far, Labour are not proposing a return to rent controls, but they are considering putting controls over rent increases, possibly linking increases to average market rents.
Two Eds are also looking at banning letting agency fees charged by letting agents.
With only 2% of the population being private landlords, many of which are not likely Labour voters , what have they got to lose by hitting us hard. With nine million tenants to win over don't be surprised if Labour don't see us as an easy piece of political meat to take a big bite out of.

many of my tenents are housebuyers between properties and 6 months is often all they want. I also have student properties which I offer on a tenancy of 11 month tenancy to suit their year or 23 months if staying 2 years. For my non student tenents I am only too pleased to offer three year tenancies but most don't want to be committed for that long.
You don't need to worry as I'm sure that we, the landlords will have to give a 3 year tenancy with no option to give notice but that the tenants will be able to leave with a couple of months notice for any reason they choose.
Typical Labour, always the control freaks. They flooded the country with immigrants, and when private landlords offer them affordable housing, they call us all the names under the sun and want full control, including payment for the job they should have done in the first place! All governments have it in their heads that only housing associations can give a total solution, but in my experience, they are far worse than any private landlord can be, with their threatening behaviour, lack of maintenance, and threat of eviction if the tenant is one day overdue. If private landlords carried on like that, they would have cause for concern, but most landlords are only interesting in protecting their investments and the welfare of their tenants. Its a pity that Labour doesn't recognise this, or even want to.
