Barking landlord made to pay £135k


Snaresbrook Crown Court has ordered landlord, Akram Hussain, 57,to pay back £130k he collected for rent on two flats he let.

Mr Hussain failed to get planning permission when he converted his three bedroom house in Barking into a 1 bed and a 2 bed flat.

Along with paying back the £129,755.15 in illegal rents, Mr Hussain was faces fines and costs of £5,000, under Section 179 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990.

The illegal rents needs to paid within three months from the judgement date, or he faces serving a 12 month prison sentence.
