Grimsby landlord jailed for 5 months

A Humberstone landlord has been jailed for 5 months and ordered to pay £100,000 costs and £4,200 compensation to tenants following a fire at a rental House in Multiple Occupation in Cleethorpes.

Landlord, Keith Newsum, 54, admitted to cutting corners when it came to fire safety at his HMO.

Grimsby Crown Court heard how Mr Newsum had failed to install the appropriate fire detectors and alarms and self-closing fire doors.

The judge accused Newsum of putting his personal wealth before his tenants welfare.

No risk assessment had been carried out at the property since 2004.
